About the event
What is Positive Discipline?
The premise of this model is to help people find a sense of belonging and significance following FIVE CRITERIA:
- Helps children feel a sense of connection. (Belonging and significance)
- Is mutually respectful and encouraging. (Kind and firm at the same time.)
- Is effective long - term. (Considers what the child is thinking, feeling, learning, and deciding about himself and his world – and what to do in the future to survive or to thrive.)
- Teaches important social and life skills. (Respect, concern for others, problem solving, communication, and cooperation as well as the skills to contribute to the home, school or larger community.)
- Invites children to discover how capable they are. (Encourages the constructive use of personal power and autonomy.)

Who's Teaching:
Many of you have met our Montessori Program Consultant Jeanne-Marie Paynel of Voila Montessori. She is able to teach and host this event because she is trained and certified in the theory. If you have not yet met Jeanne-Marie, do read on!
A bit more about Jeanne-Marie Paynel
Jeanne-Marie, or Jenny, is a former Montessori teacher who now supports new and developing Montessori programs around San Diego and across the world. She French-American, started out in Marketing only to discover the beauty of the Montessori method when her boys began in a school. Since then she pursued her certification, taught for many years and found a need she could fill as a consultant for new programs and as an educator of parents who were consistently asking for how to apply the Montessori method at home. She has therefore offered in-home visit consultations to assist parents in arranging their home to suit the needs of their babies or toddlers as well as an online course for parents. She has an online course called The Parenting School as well as a Youtube channel with helpful discussions and instructional videos of Montessori activities you can do at home.
One of my personal favorite books (and my own personal starting point as a parent when Henry was young!) is The Montessori Toddler: A Parents Guide to Raising a Curious and Responsible Human Being is written by Simone Davies, a contemporary and friend of Jeanne-Marie's. I have returned to their discussions here many times when trying to problem solve my own parenting trials and questions! I just love the kindness and respect they both have for children - they are women I truly admire and want to learn to emulate; listening to their voices and their guidance has truly transformed me as a parent!
